to see the fireflies...

“It’s starting.” “Look.” “It’s beautiful.” A chorus of soft murmurs came from the hundreds of now barely discernable gray figures scattered throughout the clearing. As the blue twilight faded toward darkness and dozens of blinking lights became hundreds – and then thousands - the din of conversation gradually faded into a quiet undercurrent of whispers and gasps of wonder.

It was not just the number of fireflies that inspired such awe and that brought so many spectators to this place. Rather, it was the unique way that the fireflies orchestrated their blinking. One moment, the forested slope above the clearing would be dark - cavernously dark. Then, suddenly, a few flashes would appear off to the right, and like a fuse, they seemed to set off a chain reaction. In a diffuse and unruly wave, thousands of flashes would appear from right to left across the field of vision, lighting up the entire forest in an eerie green light. It was as if the world’s largest chain of blinking Christmas lights had been turned on and then was suddenly unplugged again. The forest would return to that deep, cavernous dark for a few seconds… then… a few flashes occurred off to the right and the cycle would repeat itself.

Aside from the darkness, it was unnaturally quiet. Amid close to 700 people arrayed in lawn chairs, blankets, or just sitting in the grass, there was almost complete silence. Everyone spoke in the softest whispers, as if any noise might dispel the enchantment or disrupt the divine rhythm of the fireflies .

In addition to the air of wonder that suffused the crowd as the strange synchrony emerged out of random blinking, there was an unmistakable sense of relief. They weren’t going to be disappointed. In one moment of shared consciousness every person in the clearing knew without a doubt that they were witnessing one of the genuine wonders of nature.

Fireflies of Elkmont."

My family sat whispering in awe of this phenomena. I felt a part of God's beauty portrayed in this special light show. One designed for us to discover and watch in amazement. It was a great trip to be with my family and be in nature. Next year, I think I'll string up some camping hammocks, bring some hot chocolate and a sweet blanket.

Shaking bushes

Miracles are not always visible to the naked eye, but those who live by faith can see them clearly. Living by faith, rather than sight, enables you to see My Glory.

Beloved, come into the radiance of My Love-light. Let My healing Presence nourish and renew you. Be content with a simple, quiet life. Instead of shaking the bushes- trying to make things happen- wait to see what I am doing. I am at work in many areas of your life long before you can discern results. Trust Me by waiting patiently, accepting each moment as a gift from Me. When the time is right, you will see the results of My handiwork. You may even get a glimpse of My Glory.

"The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamp is its lamp." Revelation 21:23

(Recently, I have been shaking bushes to make things happen. and I fail. What truth spoken here, to just be content with the simpleness of the quiet, waiting while He works. Watching for the glimpse of what He is at work to do. I need to quit shaking bushes and let the bush speak. The bush reminded me that He doesn't need me. He doesn't need to me to change lives, or save my lost friends. He desires to do just what Jesus did...he wanted his disciples to be a part of what the Father was prompting him to do. Watching miracles unfold, raising to life from death. "Hey boys, come watch what I am about to do." For me too...as you watch His handiwork, it empowers our faith, it draws me into His work, His love-light. I want to live by faith, not by my sight that often fails me. He will once again surprise me in this season.)

sweet reunion

Brooke, on staff in Nashville for Young Life Capernaum. Her heart for kids with disabilities and the Lord is so sweet to watch and love. Babs, her laughter and fun personality made for a sweet appreciation for new friendship.

Katie Armstrong, on staff in Jefferson Co, moving to Ohio for grad school. I loved catching up with life during our YL training times. Her heart for the Lord and His will was a beautiful thing to watch unfold. I will miss you every other Friday in training.

Olivia Ogle, my area directors wife. my friend. Andy couldn't have been more lucky! I love that we share a love for life, kids, antiques, the country...and only you could pull off that amazing camo tshirt at the beach!

Grace, the YL TN region office admin, Babs, on staff in Chattanooga, and Steve "my boss" Chesney.

Leslie, my YL leader...10 years later...words couldn't express the beauty of this eternal friendship. Her passion to love on me, point me to Christ, live out the gospel in a tangible way is a true picture of God's mercy and grace. Thank you for loving me past my brokenness, chasing after me when I was unloveable and made you blush with my outbursts of word vomit and becoming my closest friend.
